The Labor Party (LP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for it’s conduct and organized preparations ahead of the Edo State governorship election.
In an interview with reporters held at Party’s campaign office in Benin City on Friday, the party’s spokesperson, Sampson Urouba, commended INEC for it’s proactive steps towards ensuring a free and fair election but emphasized the need for the electoral body to address potential technical challenges that could arise on election day.
Urouba said “we are pleased with INEC’s efforts to ensure that the electoral process is credible and transparent. The training of electoral officers, voter education campaigns, and deployment of technological tools have been impressive so far,” He said. “However, we are urging INEC to take extra measures to avoid any technical glitches that could jeopardize the smooth conduct of the election, particularly with the use of BVAS and electronic transmission of results.”
The Labor Party’s call comes in light of recent electoral experiences across the country during the 2023 presidential election where technical glitches impeded the smooth transmission of results.
Urouba emphasized that the party is keen on seeing a seamless election in Edo State, where the will of the people will be accurately reflected.
Also speaking George Udehen, the party’s director of strategy further urged INEC to ensure that every form of technology deployed on election day function efficiently. According to him “this election is crucial for Edo State, and every vote must count without any hindrance from avoidable technical setbacks.”
Recall that INEC, on its part, had assured political parties and the electorate that all necessary preparations are in place to conduct a free, fair, and credible election. The electoral body has also reassured the public that all systems has undergone rigorous testing before the election.
With less than 24 hours to the Edo governorship election, political parties and observers continue to monitor INEC’s preparations closely, activities of political parties and stakeholders’ alongside reactions of residents hoping that the election will set a new standard for electoral integrity in Nigeria.
