The International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) in Abuja has dismissed allegations of certificate forgery made against candidates running in the upcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council elections. This came after an inquiry by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, which confirmed that the candidates’ certificates were legitimate and properly issued by the Institute.
The allegations, pushed by individuals like Victorson Agbenson, Johnchucks Onuanyim, and Emeka Nze, were an attempt to discredit the candidates, particularly those who had gained traction in the election process. These accusations were quickly proven to be false, putting an end to the smear campaign led by a group of journalists who had previously dominated the NUJ FCT Council.
The NUJ FCT Council has been under the control of a small group of journalists for over six years, and their personal interests have hindered the union’s progress. As the council faces a shift in leadership, some of these individuals have resorted to desperate tactics, including spreading unsubstantiated claims about certificate forgery.
During a press briefing for journalists invited by the police, Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye clarified that the police would not stop the election process based on these allegations. He also stated that any grievances should be taken to the industrial court. If the council requires police protection during the election, a formal request should be made.
The controversy began when Victorson Agbenson, a chairmanship candidate, and two others filed a complaint claiming that several journalists had forged their Postgraduate Diploma certificates in Journalism from the IIJ. However, after a thorough review, IIJ officials confirmed that the certificates were genuine and properly issued.
IIJ representatives explained that the discrepancies pointed out by the petitioners, such as the dates of admission and graduation, were administrative details that didn’t affect the authenticity of the certificates. They assured that the institution followed the correct academic protocols, and the candidates had fulfilled all requirements for certification.
This cleared the candidates of any wrongdoing, exposing the petitioners’ accusations as a deliberate attempt to sabotage the elections for personal gain. Victorson Agbenson, in particular, has been criticized for focusing on discrediting others instead of offering a clear vision for the council.
The Federal Capital Territory Police, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, emphasized that their role in the investigation was simply to gather facts and not interfere with the NUJ elections.
This marks a turning point for the NUJ FCT Council, which has long been plagued by a system that prioritized personal power over the union’s collective progress. With the IIJ’s confirmation of the candidates’ credentials, it’s clear that the era of false accusations and intimidation is over.
As the December 4 elections approach, journalists in the council must remain vigilant and resist attempts to undermine the democratic process. The NUJ FCT Council is on the verge of a new chapter—one focused on accountability, professionalism, and the well-being of its members.
“The truth has come out, and it’s clear that the accusations were just a desperate move by those who didn’t want to let go of power. No matter what, the NUJ FCT Council is ready for change, and every injustice will be addressed. The elections are the beginning of a brighter future, built on integrity and transparency,” said a union member.
