Wales Fires Manager Robert Page

Must Read

Robert Page has been relieved of his duties as manager of the Wales national football team following a series of disappointing outcomes, according to an announcement by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) on Friday.

In a statement issued by the FAW, it was stated, “The Football Association of Wales has made the decision to terminate Rob Page’s contract as Men’s National Team Head Coach.”

Page’s tenure saw Wales qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years during 2022 and advance to the round of 16 in Euro 2020. However, their bid for the current Euros was dashed after a heartbreaking loss to Poland in a penalty shootout during the playoffs.

Despite receiving initial backing from FAW president Steve Williams to continue through the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign after the Euro disappointment, Page’s subsequent results were less than favorable. One notable setback was a goalless draw against Gibraltar in a friendly match, which is considered one of the country’s most embarrassing outcomes in its football history.

The decision regarding Page’s future was not made hastily, with the FAW taking over a week to deliberate on the matter. Ultimately, the 49-year-old former Welsh international defender departs from his role amidst mixed feelings and retrospection on his achievements.

FAW chief executive Noel Mooney expressed appreciation for Page’s contributions, stating, “On behalf of myself and the entire FAW, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rob for his commitment and dedication to his roles for the national teams.” Mooney highlighted the milestones achieved under Page’s leadership, particularly noting the historical significance of Wales qualifying for the World Cup after a lengthy absence.

The departure of Page marks a turning point for Welsh football, prompting reflections on both his successes and the challenges faced by the national team under his guidance. As the search for a new manager begins, the FAW aims to build on the achievements of the past while charting a course for future successes on the international stage.
