Soldiers from the 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Alamala, participated in an environmental sanitation exercise at Lafenwa market in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday. This activity was in conjunction with the 2024 Nigerian Army Day celebration. The soldiers were observed diligently sweeping the market and clearing the drainages in the vicinity.
Brigadier General Mohammed Aminu, the Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, highlighted the significance of the exercise in preventing the spread of cholera. “Because of the outbreak of cholera, we decided to clean the environment,” he explained to journalists. He emphasized the army’s commitment to supporting the local community and contributing positively to society.
Colonel Legborsi Nule, representing Brigadier General Aminu, underscored the army’s role as integral members of the community. “Military personnel are members of the community and play a vital role in the country’s development,” he stated. He pointed out that the annual environmental sanitation exercise is a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing the cleanliness of public spaces.
“The market serves as a hub where everyone purchases foodstuffs, so maintaining its cleanliness is crucial,” Colonel Nule emphasized. He further elaborated on the army’s decision to intervene due to the deteriorating hygiene conditions observed at the market over time.
“We noticed that the market was becoming increasingly dirty,” Colonel Nule continued. “Therefore, we took it upon ourselves to clean it, not only to assist the local authorities but also to demonstrate our solidarity with the community.”
He reiterated the military’s commitment to national development. “As citizens of this country, we recognize our responsibility in contributing to the overall progress and well-being of our society,” Colonel Nule concluded. The exercise exemplified the army’s dedication to public health and community service, underscoring their role beyond traditional military duties.
