President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated the official launch of the Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict (RSPIC) to address Nigeria’s internal displacement crisis. This marks a significant shift in the government’s strategy towards long-term rehabilitation and reintegration of affected communities.
At the groundbreaking ceremony in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, emphasized the importance of starting the project in such a diverse state, stating, “Kaduna State has offered us a launchpad to venture into the communities dislodged by conflict.” He added, “Today, we gather to say, ‘Enough is enough.'”
In February, VP Shettima had set up a steering committee to oversee the project’s implementation, chaired by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, and including representatives from key stakeholders.
The project will focus initially on seven states heavily affected by conflicts between farmers and herders: Sokoto, Kebbi, Benue, Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, and Kaduna. President Tinubu emphasized the government’s determination to break the cycle of violence and displacement that has plagued Nigeria for years, stating, “Our journey to this point has been long and arduous, but today, we converge in this historic city to demonstrate our resolve to overcome adversity.”
The RSPIC is not just about infrastructure; it aims to provide a dignified living environment by constructing residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities for conflict victims.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State praised the initiative, highlighting ongoing efforts in Tudun Biri, including the construction of a six-kilometer road, a skill acquisition center, and a clinic. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for choosing Tudun Biri, saying it demonstrates the President’s commitment to uplifting underserved communities.
President Tinubu underscored the national significance of the project, emphasizing that conflict and displacement are national challenges requiring a unified response. He assured those affected by conflict, saying, “We see you, we hear you, and we stand with you.”
Governor Sani commended the project, stating, “Today is a day of joy because we are about to set the stage for the transformation of this community.” He noted the project’s potential to improve the welfare of Tudun Biri residents and underserved populations nationwide.
Zubaida Umar, Director-General of NEMA, highlighted the project’s broader implications for citizen welfare, calling it a symbol of commitment to peace, prosperity, and unity. She anticipated similar initiatives in other states.
Arc. Mohammad Aminu Idris, representing the Zazzau Emirate Council, expressed gratitude for fulfilling the government’s pledge, emphasizing its significance to the community.
Dignitaries attending the event included Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe of Kaduna State, and various representatives from federal and state governments.
The launch of the RSPIC signals a proactive approach by President Tinubu’s administration towards resolving Nigeria’s displacement crisis, emphasizing sustainable solutions and community empowerment.
