Osimhen breaks silence after outburst on Finidi as Nigerians wait for public apology

Must Read

Enugu Rangers’ title-winning coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has openly criticized Victor Osimhen following his disparaging remarks about Finidi George on social media, according to Soccernet.ng.

Victor Osimhen, the current CAF Player of the Year, stirred controversy when he took to social media on Saturday to lash out at fans accusing him of lacking commitment to the national team. This backlash followed an alleged statement by Finidi George, which suggested that he wouldn’t beg Osimhen to play for Nigeria. In his posts, Osimhen didn’t just defend himself against the fans but also targeted Finidi in a manner many found disrespectful, questioning the former Enyimba manager’s competence.

This incident has ignited a significant controversy in the Nigerian football community. Prominent ex-internationals, including Idah Peterside and Victor Anichebe, have publicly condemned Osimhen’s behavior, calling for accountability and urging the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to intervene.

Joining the chorus of critics is Enugu Rangers’ coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, who has recently led his team to victory in the Nigeria Premier Football League. Ilechukwu, previously with MFM FC, expressed his dismay at Osimhen’s actions, labeling them as profoundly disrespectful and insisting on a public apology to Finidi.

“Osimhen is in no position to disrespect Finidi George,” Ilechukwu stated emphatically during an interview with Brila FM. “As the African Player of the Year and one of our most esteemed footballers, he must demonstrate patience and humility, even when facing criticism. He needs to apologize. An apology is a sign of humility and respect. Osimhen must understand that his actions have consequences and he should not behave as if he is beyond reproach.”

Ilechukwu continued, “This is someone who, until recently, was just an under-17 player. His achievements don’t exempt him from showing respect. The NFF should consider taking serious action against this kind of attitude to set a precedent.”

Despite the uproar, there has been no official response from Osimhen or his camp. Interestingly, the statement attributed to Finidi George, which sparked the controversy, has since been debunked as false. This revelation has further complicated the situation, highlighting the dangers of misinformation and the rapid escalation of conflicts in the digital age.

The episode has sparked broader discussions about the behavior and responsibilities of high-profile athletes, especially in the age of social media. While Osimhen’s talent and contributions to football are undeniable, his recent conduct has drawn attention to the importance of respect and professionalism, both on and off the field.

Critics argue that as a role model and ambassador for Nigerian football, Osimhen should be more mindful of his public statements and interactions. The incident underscores the fine line athletes must walk between defending themselves and maintaining a level of decorum that reflects their status and influence.

The fallout from Victor Osimhen’s comments on social media has cast a spotlight on the complex dynamics of fame, respect, and responsibility in sports. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s call for an apology and the potential for NFF intervention highlight the serious repercussions of such actions. As the situation continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the power of words and the importance of maintaining professionalism in the face of criticism.
