The Ogun State Government recently approved the allocation of 15 housing units from the affordable housing programme in Itanrin, Ijebu-Ode, to residents affected by the recent demolition at Igbegba Housing Estate. This move is part of the state government’s efforts to revitalize urban areas through its urban regeneration programme.
According to Wale Ojo, the General Manager of Ogun State Housing Corporation, who spoke during a site visit, “Residents were given four months’ notice prior to the demolition exercise, and the mortgages were extended to the people at a discounted interest rate.” He further highlighted that some residents had already enrolled in the state’s affordable housing programme.
Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by many, Ojo emphasized that the government aimed to provide relief measures to the estate’s residents. These measures include opportunities to participate in the affordable housing scheme and access loans. He stated, “The state government is aware of the current economic conditions in the country and has prioritized providing support to the residents.”
Akeem Rasheed, one of the affected residents, recounted that they had been given a four-month notice to vacate their homes to facilitate the regeneration project. Rasheed expressed gratitude for the government’s promise of relief measures, urging them to ensure these promises are fulfilled. He remarked, “If the government keeps its promise, we will forever be grateful. Their kindness will always be remembered.”
The gesture by the state government to allocate housing units and provide relief measures has been welcomed by the affected residents. They hope that this support will alleviate their challenges and enable them to rebuild their lives in the new housing units. The community looks forward to the completion of the affordable housing units in Itanrin, Ijebu-Ode, and anticipates a smooth transition from their previous residences to their new homes.
Overall, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to urban renewal and improving living conditions for its residents. By integrating affected individuals into the affordable housing programme, the state aims to ensure sustainable development and inclusive growth across Ogun State.
