Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Zenith Labour Party and also its national chairman, recently made bold predictions in Abuja regarding Nigeria’s political landscape. He forecasted that Nyesom Wike, currently Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, would challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Nwanyanwu cautioned Tinubu to handle the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State carefully, suggesting that Wike’s actions indicated his presidential aspirations for 2027. He emphasized, “He will run against you, President Tinubu, in 2027. Take it to the bank.”
Regarding the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Nwanyanwu cited constitutional provisions stating that lawmakers who defect from their party forfeit their seats automatically. He criticized judicial interference in what he deemed a straightforward constitutional matter, saying, “It is automatic.”
Nwanyanwu also addressed the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, urging President Tinubu to release him or jokingly suggested, “bring him to Eagle Square let us use him for barbecue.” He questioned Kanu’s prolonged detention compared to others involved in similar agitations.
In response to demands for an increase in minimum wage by labour unions, Nwanyanwu urged swift action by the President, proposing a minimum wage of N100,000 and suggesting other welfare improvements for workers.
Highlighting concerns over governance costs, Nwanyanwu called on Tinubu to sign an Executive Order reducing political office holders’ earnings significantly. He advocated for reforms similar to those during General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s military administration, including an effective housing scheme for workers.
Nwanyanwu’s remarks underscored his views on critical national issues, urging strategic handling of political tensions, adherence to constitutional provisions, and reforms in governance and workers’ welfare. His statements reflect ongoing debates and challenges within Nigeria’s political and socio-economic landscape as the country prepares for future elections.
