In a stakeholders meeting that brought together reporters covering the National assembly, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), issued a clarion call on the urgent need for collaborative efforts to tackle environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices across Nigeria amid escalating challenges posed by climate change.
Chinedu Igwe, Head of Sustainability NNPCL, noted that as the realities of climate change continue to unfold, Nigeria is facing unprecedented environmental challenges that threaten its socio-economic stability. From increased flooding in coastal cities like Lagos to the devastating effects of desertification in the north, the nation’s diverse ecosystems are under severe strain. Recent reports show that the country experienced heavy rainfall resulting in catastrophic floods that displaced many and caused significant damage to infrastructure and agricultural lands.
Chinedu Igwe pointed out that Nigeria, being a country heavily reliant on its natural resources, must take proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change. “The time for talking is over. We must act decisively to protect our environment, ensure energy sustainability, and secure a better future for generations to come,” he emphasized.
While discussing Nigeria’s path to sustainability, Igwe addressed the pressing challenges posed by the mining sector. The country is rich in minerals, but unregulated mining has led to severe environmental consequences, including deforestation, soil erosion, and water contamination. In regions like Plateau State, illegal mining activities have resulted in land degradation, affecting both local communities and biodiversity.
The NNPCL sustainability chief emphasized the need for strict regulations and responsible mining practices that balance economic benefits with environmental protection. “We cannot afford to sacrifice our environment for short-term gains. Sustainable mining practices must become the standard,” he added.
In response to these challenges, the NNPCL has launched several initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability in the oil and gas sector. The company is investing in technology to reduce flaring, promoting cleaner energy sources, and supporting reforestation projects across the country.
Igwe’s message resonated with the media practitioners: Nigeria’s future depends on its ability to confront climate change head-on. “We must unite as a nation—government, businesses, and citizens—to protect our environment and ensure that we leave a livable planet for our children.”
As we stand at the crossroads of environmental preservation and economic development, the path forward requires a commitment to sustainability that is both inclusive and impactful. With dedicated efforts from all sectors of society, Nigeria can rise to the challenge and become a beacon of hope in the global fight against climate change.
