Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Operation Hadin Kai in Sector 3, have successfully thwarted an attempted attack by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists along the Magumeri–Maiduguri axis in Borno State. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat the activities of insurgents in the region. ISWAP, known for its violent attacks in parts of northeastern Nigeria, has continued to pose a significant threat to peace and security in the area. However, with the vigilance and tactical expertise of the MNJTF, yet another plot to unleash terror has been effectively foiled.
In addition to neutralizing the immediate threat, the troops also recovered a cache of ammunition from the insurgents. This recovery further strengthens the belief that the insurgents were preparing for a major attack, but their plans were cut short due to the timely intervention of the military forces. The cache included a significant amount of weaponry, which, if left unchecked, could have been used to cause considerable harm to innocent civilians and destabilize the region further.
Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osaba, the Chief Military Information Officer of the MNJTF in N’djamena, Chad, provided further details about the operation. In a statement released on Sunday in Maiduguri, he commended the troops for their swift and decisive action, which helped to prevent what could have been a catastrophic situation. According to him, the operation was carefully planned and executed to ensure the safety of civilians while minimizing any potential collateral damage.
The operation unfolded as the troops set up a tactical ambush in the area where intelligence reports had indicated the movement of ISWAP terrorists. The ambush was a calculated move designed to neutralize the insurgents before they could execute their planned attack. “The troops positioned themselves tactically along the terrorists’ path of movement and engaged them as they emerged from a forested area on motorcycles,” Osaba stated.
The use of motorcycles by the insurgents is a common tactic, allowing them to navigate the rough and often difficult terrain of the region. These motorcycles enable them to move quickly and stealthily, making it easier to launch surprise attacks on vulnerable communities. However, the military was prepared for this and took up positions that gave them the upper hand. Upon sighting the troops, the terrorists attempted to flee the scene, but their escape was cut short by the superior firepower of the MNJTF forces.
“On sighting the troops, the terrorists attempted to flee but were met with a heavy barrage of gunfire,” Osaba said, emphasizing the effectiveness of the operation. The ambush was executed with precision, and the overwhelming response from the troops forced the terrorists to abandon their weapons and motorcycles, leaving behind crucial evidence of their intentions.
The items recovered during the operation were a testament to the insurgents’ violent plans. Among the weapons seized were two AK-47 rifles, which are commonly used by insurgents in the region due to their durability and ease of operation. Alongside the rifles, the troops also recovered 51 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, which could have caused significant harm if used in an attack.
Furthermore, two magazines were recovered, as well as 61 rounds of 7.62 NATO ammunition. These types of ammunition are standard for military-grade weapons and are capable of inflicting considerable damage. The recovery of these rounds suggests that the terrorists were not only prepared for an armed confrontation but were likely equipped to sustain a prolonged attack. This highlights the severity of the threat posed by these insurgents and the importance of the military’s timely intervention.
In addition to the firearms and ammunition, the troops also recovered parcels of marijuana and Tramadol. Both of these substances are commonly associated with insurgent groups in the region, who use them to either numb their fighters during combat or as a form of trade to finance their operations. The presence of these drugs alongside the weapons reinforces the fact that these insurgents operate as part of a larger criminal network that extends beyond acts of terror.
The success of this operation is a significant boost to the morale of the troops and the civilian population in the affected areas. The people living in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, have borne the brunt of the insurgency for many years, with many losing their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones to the violence. Every successful military operation that neutralizes these threats brings a renewed sense of hope and safety to the region.
