The Nigeria Football Federation, known as NFF, has refuted claims that it engaged in discussions with French coach Herve Renard regarding the vacant coaching position for the Super Eagles.
According to a report from Africa soccer.com on Monday, there were indications that the NFF had initiated contact with Renard to potentially lead the Super Eagles.
A senior official from the NFF clarified to BBC Africa, stating, “This report is inaccurate. We have not reached out to Renard or his representatives.”
Following the resignation of Finidi George a few weeks ago, the NFF is actively seeking a new head coach for the Super Eagles. Finidi had only been at the helm of the three-time African champions for approximately one month.
The urgency to appoint a new coach is driven by the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, scheduled to commence in September. It is imperative that the Super Eagles have leadership in place ahead of these crucial matches.
Currently, the Super Eagles find themselves second from the bottom in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group. With no victories secured, they trail the top two teams by four points.
The NFF remains focused on securing a capable coach who can guide the team through these challenging qualifiers and restore their competitive edge on the international stage.
