The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has announced that elections for chairmen and councillors in the state’s 21 local government areas will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024. This announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja.
SIEC Chairman Mamman Nda Eri stated that the commission has developed a comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities to ensure the electoral process is transparent, fair, and credible. “This is in accordance with the Electoral Act 2010 and Section 197 of the Nigerian Constitution, which established the commission,” Eri emphasized.
The timetable, which was presented to stakeholders on Tuesday, July 16, outlines a detailed schedule leading up to the election day. Key dates and activities are as follows:
- 22-23 July: Local government tours to address complaints. During this period, SIEC officials will visit various local governments to listen to and resolve any issues or concerns raised by the residents and stakeholders. This step is crucial to ensure that all parties feel heard and that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
- 5-12 August: Collection of forms by aspirants and political parties. Aspirants who wish to run for the positions of chairmen and councillors will collect their nomination forms during this window. Political parties will also collect forms for their candidates. This stage is essential as it marks the formal beginning of the electoral process for candidates.
- 26 August: Submission of forms. Aspirants and political parties must submit their completed nomination forms by this date. The timely submission of forms is critical to ensure that the electoral process stays on schedule and that all necessary documentation is in place.
- 30 August: Party primaries. Political parties will conduct their primaries to select their candidates for the elections. This is a vital step in the democratic process, allowing parties to choose the candidates they believe are best suited to represent them in the elections.
- 4-11 September: Verification, documentation, objections, and claims. During this period, the SIEC will verify the submitted forms and documentation. Any objections or claims regarding the candidates will also be addressed. This step ensures that all candidates meet the necessary qualifications and that any disputes are resolved before the campaign period begins.
- 12 September – 17 October: Campaign period. Candidates and political parties will have this period to campaign and present their platforms to the electorate. Campaigning is an essential part of the electoral process, allowing candidates to communicate their vision and plans to the voters.
- 13 September: Clearing and substitution of candidates. On this date, any necessary substitutions or clearances of candidates will be finalized. This ensures that all candidates on the ballot are confirmed and that any last-minute changes are accommodated.
- 2 October: Deadline for submission of party agents. Political parties must submit the names of their agents who will represent them at the polling units by this date. Party agents play a crucial role in monitoring the electoral process and ensuring that it is conducted fairly.
- 19 October: Election day. This is the day when voters in Kogi State will go to the polls to elect their chairmen and councillors. The SIEC will oversee the voting process to ensure it is conducted smoothly and transparently.
