Sylvester Ezeokenwa, a factional Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has expressed strong confidence that the internal political crises within the party will not impact the re-election prospects of Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo. Ezeokenwa made these comments during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.
Ezeokenwa’s assertion is rooted in the party’s historical resilience amidst political turbulence. He pointed out that similar crises have occurred in the past but did not hinder the party’s success during crucial elections. “We had this crisis in 2009, it did not stop the re-election of Governor Peter Obi; we had this crisis in 2013, it did not stop the re-election of Gov Willie Obiano; we had this issue in 2017, it did not stop the re-election of Gov Willie Obiano, we had this issue in 2021, it didn’t stop the election of Professor Charles Soludo.”
This historical perspective underscores Ezeokenwa’s belief that the party and its supporters remain steadfast in their commitment to APGA’s vision for Anambra State, despite ongoing disputes within its ranks. “These men that are doing this thing, they do it every four years once the election approaches. But there is one thing, Anambra State and the people of Anambra understand and believe in APGA and what APGA has brought to Anambra State,” he added.
Ezeokenwa assumed the position of APGA Chairman in May 2023 following an elective convention held in Awka, Anambra State. However, the situation is complicated by the recent recognition of Edozie Njoku as the national chair of APGA by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In July, INEC’s decision to acknowledge Njoku’s leadership was based on a court order. Njoku has contended that his position was secured through a convention held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, which he claims was properly conducted and validated his role as the national chairman of APGA.
The dispute over leadership has added to the ongoing internal conflict within the party. Ezeokenwa and Njoku represent opposing factions, and their conflicting claims have heightened tensions within APGA. Despite these internal disagreements, Ezeokenwa remains optimistic that such disputes will not affect the party’s performance in the upcoming elections, particularly concerning the re-election of Governor Soludo.
Looking ahead, the focus will likely be on how APGA manages its internal issues and present a united front to the electorate.
