Kasai emphasized that without genuinely independent electoral bodies at both national and state levels, Nigeria cannot achieve elections that are perceived as credible and fair.
He pointed out that the current composition of electoral bodies in Nigeria is flawed, with a prevalent perception among the public that many commissioners are affiliated with political parties. This situation, according to Kasai, undermines the impartiality necessary for free and fair elections. He particularly criticized the practice at the state level, where governors often appoint loyalists and party members to key electoral positions without adherence to established rules and regulations.
Kasai advocated for adopting a model similar to South Africa’s, where electoral commissioners are elected rather than appointed. Drawing a contrast with Nigeria, he noted that South Africa’s electoral system experiences less controversy due to its perceived fairness and transparency.
“The current state of affairs where governors wield considerable influence over local government elections through the appointment of commissioners aligned with their political interests is untenable,” Kasai asserted. He proposed that INEC should take responsibility for overseeing local government elections nationwide to mitigate partisan interference by governors, thereby fostering a more competitive political environment.
Expressing concern over recent developments in Plateau State, Kasai criticized the swift clearance of State Independent Electoral Commission members by the majority APC members in the State House of Assembly. He condemned this action as undermining the independence of the electoral body and compromising its ability to function impartially. According to Kasai, such appointments reflect political patronage rather than merit, further eroding public confidence in the electoral process.
“If Nigeria aims to achieve stable democracy without recurring disputes,” Kasai urged, “electoral reforms must be prioritized.” He called on the National Assembly to demonstrate courage in enacting comprehensive reforms that would insulate electoral bodies from partisan influence. Kasai stressed the need for appointing individuals of unquestionable independence and integrity to oversee electoral processes at all levels of governance.
Furthermore, Kasai underscored the urgency of revising Nigeria’s electoral laws to address existing loopholes and strengthen mechanisms for accountability.
