The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed senior police officers to ensure the safety of participants in the #EndBadGovernance protests scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024.
This directive was issued in a letter dated July 29, 2024, and signed by CP Johnson Adenola, the IG’s Principal Staff Officer. The instruction follows a request from human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), who had formally sought police protection for the hunger protesters on July 28, 2024.
The letter confirms that the IG has directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) at the Zonal Police Headquarters, and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in State Commands nationwide to ensure the request is addressed.
Additionally, the IG has requested a meeting with Adegboruwa at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to discuss the request in more detail.
