Former Super Eagles Star Odemwingie Becomes Professional Golfer

Must Read

Peter Odemwingie, a former star of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has embarked on a new journey as a professional golfer after successfully completing his training at a golf school. The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) recently welcomed Odemwingie into its prestigious ranks, marking a significant milestone in his career transition.

“It’s motivating being around people who have the drive to achieve and get this PGA Member badge on your chest!” Odemwingie expressed his enthusiasm on the PGA’s official website. The PGA, renowned for organizing global tours for professional golfers, acknowledged Odemwingie’s induction with commendation.

Reflecting on his newfound passion for golf, Odemwingie revealed that his interest blossomed towards the end of his football career. He admitted to grappling with the solitude inherent in golf, a stark contrast to the camaraderie of team sports. “I’m really proud of all of myself and my friends who are graduating today as well. It is a long journey. I fell in love with the game,” Odemwingie shared candidly.

Transitioning from a career in football, where teamwork prevailed, to golf posed unique challenges. “I play lots of pro-ams as an amateur. I am coming from a football background. I had a decent-level career in a group sport. Now I am in a different sport, sometimes you can be lonely in golf — just you and your caddie, if you have one,” he confessed. Despite the adjustment, Odemwingie successfully passed the playing ability test and gained acceptance into the PGA program, an achievement that brought him immense joy and validation.

Born in Uzbekistan to a Nigerian father and Russian mother, Odemwingie made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2002, eventually accumulating 63 appearances for the national team. His notable contributions include scoring a crucial goal against Bosnia Herzegovina during the 2014 World Cup, securing Nigeria’s advancement to the round of 16.

Odemwingie’s football career began at Bendel Insurance before taking him to prominent European clubs such as La Louvière, Lille, and Lokomotiv Moscow. His stint in the English Premier League featured spells at West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City, and Stoke City, where he showcased his talent and garnered acclaim.

Retiring from professional football in 2019 marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for Odemwingie. His transition to professional golf signifies not just a career shift but a testament to his resilience and determination to excel in a new sport. With his unique background and diverse experiences, Odemwingie continues to inspire both in Nigeria and beyond, embodying the spirit of versatility and dedication.
