As the election approaches, the independent national electoral commission INEC has issued a stern warning to political parties, reminding them that all campaigning ended at midnight on September 19. Any attempts to campaign beyond that deadline would be illegal and subject to sanctions.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the need for compliance with the law. He stated, “The commission wishes to remind political parties that in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, all campaigns by political parties end at midnight today.”
Olumekun further clarified that on Election Day, candidates and supporters must refrain from displaying campaign materials at polling units, as this would also violate electoral laws.
Jonathan Calls for Peace and Neutrality
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has added his voice to calls for a peaceful election, urging all political actors to prioritize the peace and security of Edo State. He called on INEC and security agencies to ensure a level playing field and avoid any form of manipulation. Jonathan stressed the importance of free and fair elections in consolidating Nigeria’s democracy.
PSC Urges Strict Enforcement of Electoral Laws
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has also issued directives to officers on election duty, urging them to enforce electoral laws while maintaining civility. The PSC has deployed a monitoring team to Edo to oversee the conduct of police officers during the election.
In a statement, the PSC warned that any officers found violating their duties would face consequences. “The success or failure of the election depends on the effectiveness of the police officers on duty,” the statement read.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has thrown her support behind Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate, praising his academic qualifications and leadership experience.
