The Lagos State Government has announced a concerning rise in cholera cases, with the total number reaching 401. Among the affected areas, Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa Local Government Areas (LGAs) have reported the highest incidences. Tragically, the death toll has climbed to 21, marking an increase of six fatalities from the previously reported 15.
This alarming update was shared by Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, during a briefing on Thursday. Dr. Ogunyemi provided these details after a meeting with the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), highlighting the state’s ongoing efforts to manage and contain the outbreak.
Dr. Ogunyemi explained that the increase in cholera cases was anticipated in the aftermath of the Ileya festivities, which saw large gatherings that likely contributed to the spread of the disease. However, she noted a positive trend as suspected cases are beginning to decline across various LGAs, especially in those that were previously heavily impacted. This improvement is attributed to the state’s rigorous interventions and enhanced surveillance efforts.
The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Health and in collaboration with other relevant agencies, has intensified its surveillance and monitoring activities. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to curb the spread of cholera. “The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment and its agency, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), continues to collect samples of water sources, food, and beverages to identify the source of contamination. We have also intensified our surveillance activities in communities, particularly in affected local government areas to address the situation head-on,” Dr. Ogunyemi stated.
Furthermore, the government is working closely with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure that schools implement all necessary precautions to protect students and staff as they resume activities. The collaboration aims to minimize the risk of cholera transmission in educational institutions, safeguarding the health of young learners.
Dr. Ogunyemi urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive in practicing good hygiene. She emphasized the importance of regular handwashing and participating in community sanitation efforts to prevent the further spread of cholera. Public awareness and community involvement are crucial components of the state’s strategy to combat the outbreak.
In addition, Dr. Ogunyemi advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fever to seek immediate medical attention. She reassured the public that treatment for cholera is available free of charge at all public health facilities, underscoring the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains steadfast in his commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare to all Lagos residents. Dr. Ogunyemi extended the state’s gratitude to various local, national, and international partners for their support in addressing the cholera outbreak. These partners include UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), the Red Cross, and others. Their contributions have been invaluable in the ongoing efforts to manage the health crisis.
“Appreciation is also extended to the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, environmental health officers, Water Corporation officers, surveillance officers, heads of agencies, members of PHEOC, and volunteers who are working around the clock to combat the disease and keep Lagos safe,” Dr. Ogunyemi added. The collective efforts of these professionals and volunteers are critical in mitigating the impact of the outbreak and protecting public health in Lagos State.
