Following recent security challenges in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has initiated strict measures against vehicles lacking proper license plates. According to a statement from the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, Commissioner Bennett Igweh expressed concern over the widespread practice of driving vehicles without or with single license plates across the territory, especially by car dealers operating beyond the designated hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The directive comes in response to Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005, which prohibits such practices. “Cases of armed robbery, commonly referred to as ‘one chance,’ often involve vehicles without proper license plates. This illegal activity has raised public alarm, questioning the efficacy of police interventions,” the statement elaborated.
In light of these concerns, the FCT Police Commissioner has instructed law enforcement personnel to impound vehicles found on the roads without or with inadequate license plates. Offending drivers will face arrest and subsequent legal prosecution. Additionally, Commissioner Igweh cautioned car dealers against unauthorized parking and reiterated that operating vehicles without plates after 6:00 PM will result in severe legal consequences.
