Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has expressed pride in his role in Nigeria’s democratic transition, stating that his administration laid a solid foundation for the country’s current democratic system.
Speaking at a book launch in Abuja on Thursday, 30th January, commemorating 100 years of political parties in Nigeria, Abubakar, who was represented by General Abdulrasheed Aliyu, reflected on the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy despite various challenges. He emphasised that there is no viable alternative to democratic governance.
Democracy Has Come to Stay
Acknowledging the trials that democracy in Nigeria has faced over the years, Abubakar highlighted its endurance, crediting the Nigerian people for their belief in representative governance.
“Despite military interventions, democracy has come to stay in Nigeria,” he said. “There is no substitute for a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Sovereignty resides with the people.”
He further noted that 2024 marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule—the longest period of constitutional governance since Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960.
Reflecting on his role in this journey, he stated:
“I am happy that my government, as the then military Head of State, ushered in this democratic era when I handed over power to an elected president on 29th May 1999. My government laid the foundation for democratic governance.”
The Importance of Strong Institutions
Abubakar stressed that for democracy to thrive, leaders must be patriotic, dedicated, and committed to building strong democratic structures and institutions.
“When leaders are passionate, resolute, and unwavering in strengthening democratic institutions, democracy flourishes and yields dividends to citizens,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to nurturing democracy, comparing it to a tree that must be consistently watered and cared for.
“Our democracy has been tested and shaken by reactionary forces, yet it has survived. This is a testament to the resilience and belief of the people in representative governance,” he remarked.
Strengthening Political Parties
The former leader also highlighted the need to prioritise the development of political parties, which he believes is crucial for consolidating democracy and ensuring political stability.
“It is essential to explore the development priorities of political parties to strengthen our democracy and create an environment conducive to successful elections,” he said.
He called for a return to core principles in party politics, including the supremacy of party leadership, adherence to party manifestos, and the formation of parties based on ideology rather than personal ambitions.
Ongoing Reforms for a Better Future
Abubakar also acknowledged the ongoing efforts to refine Nigeria’s democratic process, including constitutional and electoral reforms.
“We have learned a great deal during this longest period of democracy in our history. As we continue with constitutional and electoral amendments to address flaws in our electoral system and reinforce democratic ideals, we can look forward to sustainable democracy and development,” he said.
He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to embrace knowledge as a tool for progress, expressing confidence that the discussions around the newly launched book would enrich the political discourse and help shape the nation’s future.
