The Federal Government has issued a warning about extensive flooding affecting over 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as heavy rains persist. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, highlighted that 21 additional states could face similar challenges soon. This alert follows recent downpours that disrupted activities in Lagos and Ogun states, causing significant property damage and casualties.
Utsev referenced the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s Annual Flood Outlook, which predicted high flood risks in 148 local government areas across 31 states. Affected regions include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, and others prone to river flooding starting this month.
He expressed concern over potential cholera outbreaks exacerbated by flooding and noted ongoing dam operations affecting water levels in major rivers like Niger and Benue.
“As rainfall intensifies, especially in southern Nigeria, urban areas face increased flood risks due to inadequate drainage,” Utsev stated. He emphasized the critical role of early flood alerts in mitigating impacts.
The Director-General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, reiterated the government’s role in advisory services, while stressing the states’ responsibility for local enforcement and action.
Recent flooding incidents have caused tragic losses, including the drowning of a pupil in Lagos. Reports from affected communities in Lagos, Ogun, and other states highlight widespread property damage and displacement. Residents described efforts to salvage belongings amidst rising waters, underscoring the disruptive impact of the floods.
In response to the crisis, authorities are urging vulnerable residents to relocate to safer areas and emphasizing the importance of updating resident registration data for emergency planning. They attributed the flooding to climate change, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate future risks.
The government continues to monitor dam operations and river levels closely, anticipating further challenges as the rainy season progresses. Efforts are underway to support affected communities and enhance flood preparedness across the country.
