The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to civil servants regarding the unauthorized disclosure or leakage of official documents, which could have adverse effects on the nation, stating that such actions constitute punishable offenses. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, delivered this caution during a workshop in Abuja, organized by the Bureau for Public Service Reforms (BPSR) in collaboration with the Office of the SGF.
Speaking on the theme “Renewing hope and strengthening national unity through effective communication and the role of the Official Secrets Act in maintaining confidentiality and national security,” Akume emphasized that unauthorized leakage of sensitive official documents is considered a felony, with no legal defense provided in the Constitution or the Freedom of Information Act. He referenced Section 97(2) of the Criminal Code Act of Nigeria, which outlines penalties for such actions.
Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri, representing the SGF at the event, highlighted previous government efforts to curb leaks through the issuance of service-wide circulars in August 2021 and February 2024, aimed at controlling the circulation of official documents containing sensitive information, particularly on social media.
Akume also underscored the need to regulate civil society organizations that misuse the Freedom of Information Act to spread false information and harass public officers. He stressed the importance of addressing these challenges within the communication and related industries.
The SGF commended the BPSR for organizing the workshop, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring accurate and truthful information dissemination. Dr. Dasuki Arabi, Director-General of the Bureau, urged workshop participants to familiarize themselves with the Official Secrets Act and effectively communicate government policies and programs to the public.
“Your role as communication managers in MDAs is crucial, especially in today’s complex information environment,” noted Dr. Arabi. He emphasized the necessity for proactive government communication to counter misinformation and ensure citizens are well-informed about government activities and the benefits of its policies.
“Accurate and timely information delivery is indispensable,” Dr. Arabi emphasized, highlighting its significant impact on service delivery and governance.
In conclusion, the workshop served as a platform to reinforce government policies on information security and effective communication.
