Three People Injured in Building Collapse in Abuja

Three people sustained injuries when a building collapsed in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory on Monday evening. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. The collapse occurred at a four-bedroom apartment located opposite Stanbic IBTC Bank in Area 11. The building was undergoing renovation at the time of the collapse.

According to reports, several workers were trapped inside the building when it collapsed around 8:40 pm. Amiola Adebayo, the Director of the FCT Fire Service, confirmed that no fatalities were recorded. He mentioned that three injured individuals were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The three people injured have been taken to Hospital,” the report stated. “It’s an old four-storey building undergoing restructuring and renovation. Other workers on the ground confirmed that no one else remained inside the rubble. Excavation and evacuation of the rubble stopped at 1:30 am and resumed at 7:00 am on July 2, 2024.”

Josephine Adeh, the FCT police spokesperson, also verified the incident, stating, “In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams as first responders to cordon off the area for possible rescue. Three victims were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building and rushed to the hospital for medical care.”

The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria and FCT Development Control have been notified of the situation and have taken charge of the area to ensure effective management of the scene.

The incident underscores the importance of safety measures during construction and renovation projects to prevent such occurrences. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse as efforts focus on ensuring the safety of the public and preventing future incidents.
