Senate President Godwill Akpabio emphasized during Thursday’s plenary that Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly is determined to prevent tragic incidents like the recent plane crashes that claimed the lives of Iran’s President and Malawi’s Vice President due to faulty aircraft. He underscored the Senate’s commitment to swiftly approve President Bola Tinubu’s request for replacements if necessary, prioritizing the safety of the Presidential Fleet.
Akpabio clarified that despite media speculations, there has been no formal request for the approval of a new presidential jet presented to the lawmakers. He asserted the Senate’s readiness to act in the interest of the nation, stating, “We care about the President and the Nigerian people. We will approve things that will benefit the Nigerian people.”
Addressing concerns about potential opposition or misinformation, Akpabio criticized attempts to manipulate public opinion or preemptively influence Senate decisions. He dismissed recent attempts to discredit his statements, highlighting his commitment to transparent governance and thorough scrutiny of any future requests related to presidential fleet upgrades.
The Senate President urged his colleagues to focus on their legislative responsibilities and ignore external pressures attempting to sway their decisions. He reaffirmed the Senate’s willingness to consider future requests related to the Presidential Fleet if deemed necessary, dismissing current rumors of an imminent approval for new aircraft. Previously, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence had recommended the acquisition of new aircraft for the President and Vice President, citing safety concerns with the existing fleet. This recommendation followed the tragic plane crashes involving Iran’s President in May 19, 2024, and Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima on June 12, 2024.
