Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, reassured Nigerians of the Nigerian Army Headquarters’ unwavering commitment to swiftly resolve all security challenges plaguing the nation. Addressing stakeholders at a roundtable in Abuja, Lagbaja emphasized the Army’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria and its citizens amidst a backdrop of multifaceted security threats.
“Nigeria is confronted with numerous security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and clashes between farmers and herders,” Lagbaja acknowledged. These issues have resulted in tragic loss of life, rampant abductions, and forced displacement of millions of people across the country.
Highlighting the Army’s proactive stance, Lagbaja stated, “I assure you of AHQ’s commitment to timely resolution of all insecurity issues in a manner beneficial to our nation and its citizens. The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with sister Services and other security agencies, will continue to operate decisively to safeguard our country, fostering necessary development for all Nigerians.”
In appealing for national support, Lagbaja urged Nigerians to trust and assist the Army and other security agencies in their mission to restore lasting peace, a prerequisite for sustainable development. “Security is a collective responsibility of society,” he emphasized, underscoring the need for mutual understanding, confidence-building, and cohesive relationships among all stakeholders.
Professor Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, echoed Lagbaja’s sentiments while lamenting the misunderstanding and dwindling cooperation faced by citizen soldiers in certain communities. He noted, “Soldiers’ efforts are often misunderstood, resulting in reluctance among communities to provide crucial intelligence. This reluctance undermines their ability to secure lives effectively.”
Reflecting on past successes in security, Ikechukwu pointed out, “During times of relative peace, communities understood their responsibility to share information. However, this cooperation has waned significantly.” He emphasized the urgent need to address this crisis of trust and restore effective collaboration between communities and security forces.
