A group of approximately 50 members of the House of Representatives, hailing from diverse political backgrounds and representing various geopolitical zones of Nigeria, have united under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East. Their collective appeal, directed at President Bola Tinubu, urges decisive action invoking constitutional provisions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This move, they argue, is critical to fostering peace and stability in the troubled South East region of Nigeria.
In a formal communication addressed to President Tinubu, dated June 19, 2024, the lawmakers articulated their concerns and proposals in a meticulously detailed three-page letter.
“Your Excellency, we are concerned members of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a strong belief and trust that the RENEWED HOPE agenda of His Excellency and the various positive reforms would be seen and felt by all,” the letter begins, emphasizing their alignment with the administration’s agenda for national renewal and inclusivity.
The signatories, including prominent figures such as Hon Obi Aguocha from Abia, Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere from Imo, and Hon. Aliyu Mustapha from Kaduna, underscore the urgency of invoking Section 174 of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
